For ECE Teachers: Towards Reconciliation - What do the Calls to Action Mean for ECE? (35 minutes)

If you are not familiar with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action (2015),  please review this document before reading the Taylor (2017) article  below.  The Calls to Action are a direct result of the TRC's findings.  You do not have to read all 94 Calls to Action, but do focus your attention on the ones that have to do with Early Childhood Education- Sections 10-12 and K-12 Education- Section 62 and 63.

Read the 5 page article, Towards Reconciliation: What do the Calls to Action Mean for Early Childhood Education? (Taylor, 2017). Here the author shares ideas of what the Calls to Action mean for Early Childhood Educators and how they relate to ideas such as child autonomy, culturally sensitive curriculum, Indigenous languages, parent participation, and honoring Treaty relationships.

PANDA CUB HOUSE LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We humbly acknowledge that we are settlers here on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and traveling route to the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit, whose footsteps, culture, knowledge and history have marked these lands for centuries. This is the land that we inhabit, we are only here because of Treaty. We are all treaty people.

We are non-Indigenous people whom are grateful to live, work, learn and play here in Treaty 6 territory and acknowledge that we are a visitor on this land. In response to the TRC and in the spirit of genuine reconciliation, we are committed to understanding the effects of colonization, our role in it, and how we can be a better ally and apprentice, and to uplift the voices of Indigenous people.
